Author Insight: Cover Designers

If your cover designer retired, whose would you steal to design for your books?

"I love the silhouette designs on The Penderwicks books. Then again, I love everything about those books." - Amy Kathleen Ryan, author of Glow.

"Anne Geddes. Is she the one who takes all those pictures of babies in, like, pea pods and lily pads? I know it's a very 90's thing to admit, but I love those pictures. Next thing you know, I'll be pegging my pants.

I just realized you probably meant which authors have covers that I admire. I would probably steal Becca Fitzpatrick's (Hush, Hush) designer." - Brodi Ashton, author of Everneath.

"Oh, whoever did my German cover. I loved that cover." - Anna Sheehan, author of A Long, Long Sleep.

"This guy: http://pottercriterion.tumblr.com/" - Jeff Hirsch, author of The Eleventh Plague.

"I might have to retire then, too. The design agency my UK publisher works with, called The Parish, completely ‘get’ my books and make them look amazing. On the other hand, if I had to choose someone else to do a great job, it would be illustrator and animator Zdenko Basic, who creates magical cover art." -Teresa Flavin, author of The Blackhope Enigma.

"I have no idea." -Susan Beth Pfeffer, author of Blood Wounds.

"The painter Gustav Klimt, although I would have to pull of a little resurrection for that. To me, his style strikes a gorgeous balance between reality and fantasy." - Jennifer Castle, author of The Beginning of After.

"Hmmm… I really love whomever did Across the Universe by Beth Revis. And, I'm very partial to whomever designed the cover for Brenna Yovanoff!" - Julia Karr, author of XVI.

"I have always loved the Wicked Lovely covers and I also like the cover of Hush, Hush. The Beautiful Creatures books have a unique, haunted quality to them and I liked the stark symbolism of the Breaking Dawn cover. So I’d be happy with whoever designed any of those." - Kiki Hamilton, author of The Faerie Ring.

"Well, designer is one thing, artist another, and I don't know the names of many designers. But I can tell you some artists, living and dead, whose art I'd love on a jacket: Trina Schart Hyman, Leo and Diane Dillon, Kinuko Craft... And practically anyone who can manage a 10s/20s classic children's book Arthur Rackham type style. I'd also love to see indie artists doing book covers. Basically I'd love to see a return to illustrated covers being the standard, and for books to be gorgeous little packages, like many Japanese books, which as far as I've seen are the most gorgeous and pleasant-to-hold books in the world." - Jaclyn Dolamore, author of Between the Sea and Sky.

Stop by Thursday to find out whose cover designer the rest of the authors would like to steal.
