I'm not sure if I can put these in any order, but the three things that hook me are: The book's cover, the summary provided by the publisher (and along those same lines, the publisher themselves), and then the opinions of people I know who have read it.

I used to be able to say dystopia. But now there are SO MANY dystopians that there are bad mixed in with the good. So I'll have to say that the stories that grab my attention are those that are not predictable (I don't want to be guessing the "twist" half-way through) and those that aren't completely dependent on whatever romance is in the book. I like books that have romance as spice, but not as the main course.

I'm well known at my blog as a "love skeptic." It's VERY hard for me to actually enjoy a love story. I hate any kind of insta-love or unexplained attraction. Therefore, the only love stories that I fall for are those that develop over time. I need the characters to get to know each other and I need to see why they are good together. You can't just say that they're a perfect match, you need to prove it to me. That way I become invested in their relationship and I can make my own opinions.

My number one reason for releasing a book is profanity. If there's too much in the book I'll just drop it. But I'll also drop it if I'm bombarded with insta-love or an over abundance of description ("tortured blue eyes." "tantalizing brown hair." What does any of that even mean?!). And, on the rare occassion, I will drop a book just because I'm bored. Usually if I can tell that the book is taking so long to read that I could have read two or more other books, I will drop it.
