Author Insight: Fictional Matchmaking

If your character was best friends or in a romantic relationship with a character from another book, who would it be?

"Velveteen is self-destructive as hell. She’s the kind of girl who, had she lived, would have sought out someone like Palahniuk’s Tyler Durden. In fact, she probably would possess Marla to get to him." - Daniel Marks, author of Velveteen.

"I think Felicia would love being friends with Karou from Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Felicia being in exotic places, but she doesn’t necessarily enjoy the arduous process of getting there. So she’d love to go with Karou through all the secret doors! Plus, Karou is just cool, with a personality that’d mesh well with Felicia’s." - Lenore Appelhans, author of Level 2.

"Hmm, okay, so I’m playing matchmaker between fictional characters. Well, I think both my heroines—the sisters, Alice and Charlie—would go for Logan Echolls from Veronica Mars. (And I do I realize I’m cheating a bit because he’s a character in a TV show, not a book.) Charlie would go for him because he’s a bad boy. Alice would go for him because he’s good boy underneath the bad boy. Plus—let’s be honest—he’s a babe, a quality not lost on either sister." - Lili Peloquin, author of The Innocents

"The protagonist of my upcoming book The Wrap-Up List is sixteen-year-old Gabriela. She's an inquisitive person with a strong sense of humor, and I think she'd get along well with Harriet from Harriet the Spy (which I happen to be reading this week). They'd have great conversations, and probably get into some zany scrapes. For romance, I'm not sure, but I can imagine Gabriela and Harriet talking about it." - Steven Arntson, author of The Wrap-Up List.

"I think any and all of my characters would love to be in a romantic relationship with St. Clair from Stephanie Perkins' Anna and the French Kiss. I say that because I'm pretty sure I would love to be in a romantic relationship with St. Clair." - Lisa Schroeder, author of Falling for You

"I want to date Katniss. I mean my character does." - Allen Zadoff, author of Since You Left Me.

"Oh, Mr. Darcy, for sure. Miranda, from Kissing Shakespeare, would be up to the job of sparring with him, and she would feel equal parts attraction and irritation. In the end, she’d succumb to his charms!" - Pamela Mingle, author of Kissing Shakespeare.

"I like to think Mac would settle down with a nice, sensitive male from a John Green book. Any John Green book. Sadly, I think she’s entirely too good at getting herself into trouble for that to ever happen." - Kathleen Peacock, author of Hemlock.

"I would love to see Callie, from my upcoming novel All That Was Lost, hang out with Sandinista Jones from The Sharp Time by Mary O'Connell. They're both very self-sufficient girls who know loss, and I think they'd be great friends." - Trish Doller, author of Something Like Normal

"This gets interestingly metatextual, given that my main character Jane is a big fan of paranormal YA fiction, all of which exists in her world just as it does in ours. I suspect that Jane has at some point written guilty self-insert Twilight fanfic in which she dazzles Edward Cullen into taking classes in feminist literary theory..." - Helen Keeble, autor of Fang Girl

"Funny. I couldn't imagine the character in my current release, Freaks Like Us, with anyone else other than the girl he loves. Jason belongs to Sunshine, no questions asked. Now, I could imagine that if Sunshine had never met Jason, she might have hooked up with Jersey Hatch in Trigger, because she would have been able to see the real "him" despite the disability he struggles to overcome." - Susan Vaught, author of Freaks Like Us

Stop by Thursday to see what character in another novel the authors would like to see one of their characters fall for or befriend.
